Grandparents Day 2020: How we’re celebrating & how you can too!

This hasn’t been the easiest year for our grandparents and those who take on the role of grandparents. Due to COVID-19, many of us have been left disconnected from the precious older members of our communities, with Zoom calls and messages replacing real-life cuddles and quality time.

Our centres know just how important grandparents can be. From the grandparents who are primary carers, to those we would normally visit at local aged care facilities,  they play a big role in supporting, loving and appreciating our little ones.

Looking to celebrate Grandparents Day with your own loved ones, but not sure how to begin? Why not take some inspiration from our centres and everything we’ve been up to!

Create some artwork and share the love

Many of our centres have been getting creative with painting, drawings, motivational frames and photos, combining them all for the older members of our families and communities to enjoy!

Our friends at sister centre Kindy Patch Elermore Vale reached out to five local nursing homes to deliver some hugs, painting ‘arms’ on paper then sticking their faces in the middle. They were then delivered with the following verse:

“We miss you when you’re far away. We’d love to see you every day. But since we can’t come over to play, we’re sending you a hug today! So although it may be quite a sight, wrap my arms around you tight, repeat daily to keep your smile bright, until we get to reunite!”

Why not take some inspiration from our artwork and poetry and share your own with your loved ones or local aged care facility?

You might even get a letter back – check out some of the letters our children have been lucky enough to receive from their friends at nursing homes.

Connect on Zoom, or film a song or dance

We’ve been loving Zoom meetings at our centres, with chlidren even being able to meet other children’s grandparents and say hello!

If your grandparent is unable to connect to Zoom, why not film a song or a dance and send it through to a loved one?

Deliver a gift hamper

Small gestures mean a lot, like the kindness hamper filled with goodies that the team at sister centre Community Kids Enoggera put together for a nearby nursing home! Take inspiration from the below and fill it with some everyday essentials along with some delicious treats such as tea, biscuits and a beautiful card.

Whatever you choose to do, we have no doubt that it will not only make their day, but possibly their year. Thank you for supporting our wonderful Grandparents on this special day!
