Craft Corner – Fans of Summer

Fans are simple, rudimentary tools that have often been used as a method to keep people cool during the warmer times of the year. Over time, they have fanned out to become an easel on which to express yourself artistically. Our craft idea this month champions creative expression with a practical output in the form of fans! Why not experiment with recurring patterns like waves, spirals, or cursive letters? Let creativity take you away! Once your design is done, some fine motor skills can be practised through the folding method before finally you can keep yourselves cool with your handy dandy creative fan! For the printable version click here!

  1. Design your own fan using the A4 paper sheets
  2. Fold about 1cm of paper in on itself
  3. Flip upside down and fold the 1cm section back over the section you have just folded
  4. Repeat these steps until the folded paper resembles an accordion
  5. Squeeze the bottom section (about a thumb’s length) of paper for the grip
  6. Position two paddlepop sticks on either side of the bottom section and sticky tape together
  7. Voila, fan away!
